While you may want to gawk at hourly rates some photographers charge what you don’t see is after the lens cap is put back on the camera, the hours of post-production processing that must be done to create the final image. A lot of work goes into the creative process to produce a product that will be delivered to the clients requirements and expectations. When you start breaking the numbers down, the hourly rate for a project is significantly less and starts looking less glamorous than the quoted total for a project. For example, we may shoot a two-hour event for $200 and capture 400-500 images, but when we get back to behind the computer we typically spend an average of four hours to process the images, culling through the keepers and correcting the ones that make the cut. That works out to an average of $33 per hour of work. It still sounds like a lot when compared to the minimum wage but look back to those fixed costs we mentioned earlier.
